Chapter 15

I thought tonight would have been an easy bag and tag—or rather bag and drag—and I’d be back at the hotel with a glass of wine, celebrating with my friends just how clever I was to find Bellamy, though I had help from Valen. We’d discuss how much closer I was to proving my innocence to the Gray Council.

I was wrong. I’d been wrong a lot lately.

“Get behind me.” I hauled Shay behind me just as I pulled on my starlight. My body hummed with the power of the stars. “Tomorrow night, I’m going to teach you how to use your magic,” I told her, never taking my eyes off the three witches. I knew Shay would most probably sneak out again. She wouldn’t be facing witches, though. She’d be facing angels, and she needed to be ready.

Black hoods hid most of the witches’ faces, but I could see that two were light-skinned, and the other was dark. Dressed all in black, they looked like spills of ink against the darkening sky. They didn’t move, instead just stood there with cocky expressions, in their stupid-ass, black robes.

“That’s it. I’m dead. I’m dead,” squealed Bellamy, hopping from foot to foot like he needed to pee. What a tool.

“Shut up, Bellamy.” A flicker of annoyance rose in me, but I quickly quashed it.

“Why did I listen to you? I’m the smart one. Not a Merlin.” Bellamy looked over his shoulder, his wide eyes on the motel as he turned his body toward it.

Crap. “You go in there, and you’re basically asking to be killed. It’s a death trap. There’s nowhere to run in there.”

The witch scientist looked me over, thinking it through. “I don’t want to die.”

I stared at the witches across from us. “No one is dying tonight.” Well, at least not us. “But I’m going to need your help,” I told him.

He looked at me like I’d just ruined one of his experiments. “Me? What can I do? I told you I don’t know how to fight.” Now he really looked like he was about to bolt.

I was going to ask him to watch over Shay, but seeing him now and knowing what I already knew about him, he’d ditch her to save his own ass. Couldn’t have that.

“If you won’t fight them, get behind me.” I had to protect him as well, just as I had to protect Shay. Damn. I should call Valen, but by the time he’d get here, it would be too late.

I’d have to fight them off. I’d been faced with worse odds before and survived. But I didn’t have two people to guard at the same time.

I stole a look over my shoulder. Shay’s face was pale, and her eyes had that deer-in-the-headlights look. She was terrified. Damn. Damn. Damn.

Speaking of said witches, they were still standing there, although I could see their lips moving.

“Why are they not moving?” asked Bellamy, pulling the words out of my head.

A spark of cold energy rolled our way.
